- This session will debate what a roadmap for change should look like and what are the criteria and opportunities (financial, social, economic, etc) for a successful British railway.
- In all the talk of a passenger-focussed railway, freight operations get all too easily bumped into second place, yet expanding the volume of goods moved by rail is absolutely critical in reducing transport's impact on the environment and on improving safety. This session will look at modal shift and effective long-distance freight and last mile delivery solutions, showcasing opportunities of and barriers to rail freight and creating urban consolidation centres, which can reduce the amount of freight and mileage in urban areas.

Diesel fuel contamination is a global problem, costing equipment operators £Billions per year in increased maintenance and reduced operational efficiency, and causing c.85% of diesel-powered equipment breakdowns. It is also a critical driver of increased harmful emissions due to the engine not operating within its design parameters. Unipart Rail and FuelActive are working in partnership to deliver an innovative solution which will transform the landscape of the rail industry by mitigating fuel contamination, enhancing levels of performance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency.
The patented FuelActive pick-up system replaces the standard pipe in a vehicle’s fuel tank with a dynamic floating pick-up unit, which draws fuel from just below the surface of the tank, supplying the engine with 92% cleaner fuel.
Join us to learn how Colas Rail UK are currently benefiting from the FuelActive solution, reducing fuel and carbon emissions by up to 7%. -

The broad technology has, consequently, remained largely the same for two centuries. Yet the challenges the railway faces today are significant - how do suppliers develop new solutions to tackle these evolving needs? As a supplier of some of the most fundamental components that make the railway work, Jamie Pogson will talk us through Pandrol's latest innovations in noise and vibration mitigation as a case study in research and development.
- In this short workshop, Trough-Tec Systems(TTS) will be discussing ways in which we can work together to reduce carbon footprints within projects by considering how each component of the value chain can play its part. Hosted by Lucy Prior and Xavier Guilhen TTS will be inviting attendees to share ideas and examples, and difficulties, that will be fed back into industry working groups.
- Rail reform and investment: creating a better railway for everyone to ensure its long-term future.
- AceOn Group based in West Midlands - the heart of the industrial revolution and leading the way on the Green Revolution is pioneering clean energy transition by deploying portable, mobile and static energy storage solutions. The AceOn 'Li-OnESS' range of Portable Energy Storage (PES) units uses both first and second-life battery technology. We are working with OEMs to devlop an exciting pipleline of energy storage products that use 2nd life EV batteries to create swappable batteries that are placed in our solar battery-operated generators which will be charged via our AceOn PES Charging Station. Some 6 million EV battery packs per year will be retiring every year from 2030. We are aiming to play our part in delivering a sustainable circular economy by designing energy storage systems that can replace fossil fuel generators as well as creating e-mobility solutions. Our AceOn team are demonstrating on Stand S42b.

Taking place in the engineering theatre will be the Primary Engineer programme
challenge! The Primary Engineer Rail Programme is an educational not-for-profit scheme delivered in partnership with Porterbrook.
For Rail Live, five teams each made up of four primary-age children and an adult
engineer will take part in a timed engineering challenge.
Although this will be a timed challenge, the overall activity is designed to celebrate
the pupils’ engineering achievements so all pupils taking part will be recognised for
their work; all of them have also already taken part in the Primary Engineer Rail

Programme. - Senior members of the Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) management board will talk about their experiences and the challenges Ukrainian rail workers are facing due to the ongoing conflict with Russia – and what you can do to help. The session will also include a panel discussion with commentary from the British rail industry involved in supporting the Ukrainian Railway.
- We hear a lot about how artificial intelligence can solve any and all problems - and much of this hype is bluster - but there are real world applications of the technologies it refers to. Machine learning is a key example when you've got the right data. Cate Lough from One Big Circle explains what these applications look like in practice, and how best to deploy them.
- This session will focus on how the railway can attract a younger, more diverse workforce by drawing on the knowledge of a panel of experts. This session is targeted at business leaders across all parts of the rail industry, which is facing an impending crisis due to an ageing workforce and rising competition for the best talent.
- For any railway with fast, frequent or freight services, there's no viable long term traction solution than overhead electrification. Britain needs to be wiring up around 600 single track kilometres a year to meet the government's own net zero targets. But we're barely managing that, even if the pace is picking back up. Simon Skinner joins us to explain what we're doing to get up to those numbers from a contractor perspective, and what lessons we've learnt over the last ten years.
- Running a safe railway. This session will focus on PRIMA, one year on - learnings, impact, successes, next stages, further developments, etc. ORR priorities for 2024/25.
- Join Chevron Green Services as we showcase the transformative benefits of using thermal imaging cameras for Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW). Discover how our new procedures using thermal imaging cameras enhances efficiency, accuracy, and safety for ECoW, whilst minimising disruptions to natural habitats. Experience firsthand how this technology supports detailed data records, enabling ongoing ecological monitoring and conservation efforts. Don't miss this opportunity to see how we are setting new standards in ecological fieldwork.
- One of the biggest threats to the railway is that there is simply not enough access to maintain today's services as they are, let alone upgrading services for the future. Whilst solving this will require structural changes to the way the industry is organised, we can also work smarter under existing arrangements. Speakers join our panel to discuss how we can make better use of the access we have, book smarter access and deliver more efficiently for the railway and its users.

In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, Prolectric continues its efforts to steer the wider infrastructure industry towards a greener future.
Our landmark ‘Site of the Future’ project in collaboration with Network Rail and Colas Rail at Llanwern, South Wales, successfully demonstrated the potential of solar power to support a remarkable 97% reduction in diesel use and cutting over 15 tonnes of CO2 emissions in just 14 days.
As a leader in sustainability, it is Prolectric's mission to reduce the environmental impact of rail operations through innovative solar technologies that enhance worksite sustainability, safety, and efficiency. - In all the talk of a passenger-focussed railway, freight operations get all too easily bumped into second place, yet expanding the volume of goods moved by rail is absolutely critical in reducing transport's impact on the environment and on improving safety. Speakers from Network Rail, Freightliner and one of our valued freight customers joins the panel to consider how the rail industry can do more to unlock rail freight's potential.
