The Chartered Institution of Railway Operators is the professional membership body dedicated to advancing skills, knowledge and professionalism in railway operations. Founded by operators for the industry, it supports over 14,000 professionals across train operators, Network Rail, the supply chain and wider stakeholders. As a not-for-profit, CIRO develops the people who keep the railway running through membership, learning, qualifications and collaboration.

With more than 25 years experience, CIRO delivers rail-specific learning designed for real operational environments, bridging theory and practice. Its programmes include Railway Operations Management courses with Keele University, alongside apprenticeships, short courses and initiatives such as CIRO Connect and IROLS.

Professional membership is a recognised mark of credibility, supporting career progression and organisational capability. CIRO also connects the industry, enabling collaboration and shared learning. Its impact is reflected in award-winning programmes recognised at the Spotlight Rail Awards 2025 and Rail Business Awards 2026, supporting the railway’s long-term success.
