In all the talk of a passenger-focussed railway, freight operations get all too easily bumped into second place, yet expanding the volume of goods moved by rail is absolutely critical in reducing transport's impact on the environment and on improving safety. This session will look at modal shift and effective long-distance freight and last mile delivery solutions, showcasing opportunities of and barriers to rail freight and creating urban consolidation centres, which can reduce the amount of freight and mileage in urban areas."
